Can you believe we’re already one week into the new year?
How are your goals coming along? Are you on the right path? Or did you lose sight?
I think the biggest reason we often don’t follow through on our new year’s goals is that they’re often too broad and we honestly don’t know how to achieve them.
I get it! I do it all the time – say I’m going to do one thing but forget by lunch that I ever made a promise to myself. When that happens, pump the breaks and put a bit more focus into goal prep work.
Here are 5 tips for accomplishing your new year goals:
- Define what you really want
Take some time to truly define what you want this year. If your goal is to floss more, what does more mean? Everyday? Every other day? Make your goals clear and easy to define.
2. Make a plan
Don’t just say it. DO IT! Small actions every single day will create a big impact by the end of the year. Say you want to read 30 books this year, set time in your schedule every day to read. Make it a priority by creating a “reading” appointment in your calendar. Figure out how many pages per week you have to read to achieve your goal and start there. Make a list of the books you want to read so you’re not wasting time trying to decide later. Put thought into how you can make your goals manageable and it will push you closer towards success.
3. Say it out loud
A goal is so much harder to forget once you’ve told someone about it, especially someone you know is going to ask you about it later. Accountability is key for success! Have someone you trust help you stay on track. When things get hard, lean on your partner! Talk about the challenges your facing and brainstorm how you can overcome them. Goals are much easier when you’re brave enough to say it out loud.
4. Visualize your life
This is one of my favourite steps. Often people suggest you visualize how you’ll feel when you complete this goal but I want you to do the opposite. Visualize how your life would look without accomplishing your goal. How do you feel? Same as right now?
I often find when we visualize our life not completing the goal it helps to push you in the right direction.
5. Get it done
Challenges will come and go but these goals take time. It doesn’t happen overnight so don’t give up when you’re not a millionaire by January 31st. Keep pushing for your goals and use your plan to get a little bit closer every day.
If you’re looking for a book to help push you in the right direction, check out:
The Compound Effect by Darrin Hardy
Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.
