The Candado Vanderbilt Hotel: a piece of paradise

Last week, Glen and I started our honeymoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We spent three days at the unique and beautiful five star Candado Vanderbilt Hotel, located on the strip along Candado beach. After hearing many mixed reviews, we were unsure of what our experience here would be.

After a 12 hour day of flights, we hopped into a cab that gave us a quick tour of the area, suggested a few places to eat and drink and repeatedly told us how safe the area was. We arrived at the extravagant hotel where they quickly sweeped our luggage up and guided us to the front desk to check in. We were greeted with champagne by our bell hop, Alberto who then took us on a tour of the hotel. He introduced us to everyone we passed as the newlyweds from Canada.

The Candado had everything we needed to relax. They had the best food, drinks and adult only areas. They provided towels and chairs at the beach (where other hotels on the strip didn’t). They also made training for the upcoming Bluenose half marathon easy. Their gym had everything you needed for a quick workout and best of all, it overlooked several of their pools and the ocean. There’s nothing more motivating then running towards the water you will be diving into after your sweaty run.

As we continue our journey on the Carnival Pride, I still dream of the beautiful swimming areas, the short walk to the beach and the taste of Puerto Rican rum.

If you’re looking for a getaway with an array of delicious food, beautiful sandy beaches, exotic drinks and intoxicating music, check out Puerto Rico. And if you want a relaxing, worry free vacation, splurge on the Candado Vanderbilt. You won’t regret it!

We’re off for another week in the sun! Next stop: the St. Lucia rainforest.
